But… er, where’s the buttermilk?

Buttermilk chicken GP

Unboxing my sandwich

The buttermilk crispy chicken sandwich made its debut in McDonald’s in Singapore on 13 April, introduced under the chain’s Signature line.

Priced at S$8.95 the set includes a medium soda and fries. The burger consists of many fresh ingredients, such as the usual cheese and caramelised onions, and also, interestingly, pineapples. A layer of buttermilk encasing the patty is an intriguing proposition, yet biting into it was a major disappointment.

The generous topping of pineapples, iceberg lettuce, and tomatoes — usually a good thing — completely overwhelmed the taste of any buttermilk that could have been present. All I felt in my mouth was a McSpicy chicken (minus the spicy) with a twist of pineapple and cheese. For ‘buttermilk’ to be in the name of the dish, I’d expect a hint of maybe a Popeye’s biscuit flavour, but there was none to be savoured. On its own, it was a perfectly fine chicken sandwich which I ended up finishing. It was still tasty and substantial, after all. I just felt betrayed by the branding.

Should you decide to try out the Buttermilk crispy chicken, don’t get your hopes up too high, at least in the buttermilk department. That said, the pineapple rings impressed me as a novel burger ingredient. Overall, for its price, the meal is quite reasonable, given the amount of pineapple and vegetables that accompany a thick slab of chicken, providing a filling and nutritious meal for a hungry teenager.
